The effects of Hurricane Katrina were felt by the New Orleans areas three days before landfall was made. Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds of more than 125 MPH on the morning of August 29th, 2005. Three hours later, there were reports of the Industrial Canal levee has been breached. As flooding proceeded through the lower reaches of New Orleans, the 17th Street levee failed four hours later. This proceeded to flood other areas of New Orleans. By the time the hurricane was finished, over 80 percent of the city was under water.
